Detroit Lions logoForget all the talk about Super Bowl XL being in Detroit, let’s talk about the hometown team - the Detroit Lions.  I know you Detroit fans hate Matt Millen with a passion, so I hope to give you some optimism for next year.  Firstly, there has been a coaching change, even though some fans may say ex-coach Steve Mariucci wasn’t really the problem.  The new head coach coming in is a relative unknown. He is Rod Marinelli, a former Tampa Bay defensive line coach.  Lions also recently hired Donnie Henderson as their defensive coordinator, formerly of the New York Jets.  They also have their eye on Mike Martz as the offensive coordinator.  There has to be some excitement over the coordinator moves at the very least.  Well, those moves will only be as good as how the players perform on the field, and with that being said, they’ll most likely acquire a good player from the draft at the #9 position.  According to NFL Draft Countdown, they have Lions choosing a USC product and you can’t go wrong with those guys. Winston Justice, who played right tackle for the Trojans is one of them.  If not, USC RB Lendale White should still be on the board as well, if the Lions decide the injury prone Kevin Jones is not the answer.

Ducks of Anaheim announced today that they have plans of officially changing their team name to the Ducks of Anaheim, removing the word “Mighty.” Henry Samueli said in a statement issued by the team Friday:

“The process is still very much underway, and we do not expect to be ready to make any further announcements until the end of the season.”

The NHL team is also considering logo and jersey changes for the upcoming year.  The Mighty Ducks were formed as an expansion franchise in 1993, and named by then-Disney chairman Michael Eisner after the company’‘s movie of the same name. Many players on the 22-17-10 Anaheim Mighty Ducks, including Teemu Selanne are glad that the name has not completely changed. The name change still respects the heritage of the team, and they plan on always being known as the Ducks. This year, the Ducks are 6 points shy of a playoff appearance with nearly half the season left to play. How will the Anaheim Mighty Ducks’ last season turn out?

Ian ThorpeIan Thorpe, a superb swimmer from Australia, will call it quits after the 2008 Olympics, at the ripe old age of 25.  Thorpe, nick-named the “Thorpedo” was outstanding in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece, where he picked up two gold medals and a silver for participating in a riveting four man relay race against Michael Phelps and the United States team.  He has placed a total of nine times in the Olympics, including five gold medals, three silver medals and one bronze medal.

Boston Celtic fans rejoice, it has been 14 years but the wait is finally over.  The Celtics are back in action with the white forward who can shoot the rock, the player they have been looking for since Larry Bird retired.  Silly Celtic fans, and to think you guys thought you had to tank this season and wait until the 2006 draft to get Adam Morrison from Gonzaga.  The architects of this deal are former members of the Celtic championship days, T-Wolves GM is Kevin McHale, and Celtics Executive Director of Basketball Operations is Danny Ainge.

The breakdown of the deal is the Celtics receiving Wally Szczerbiak, Michael Olowokandi, Dwayne Jones and future first round pick in exchange for Ricky Davis, Mark Blount, Marcus Banks, Justin Reed and two second round picks.  The T-Wolves were able to unload Szczerbiak’s huge contract and free up some cap room, and also traded him at his highest market value; as he has been playing well so far this year.

The first thing that comes to mind in this deal is that Kevin Garnett is going to experiment with yet another sidekick.  So far in Garnett’s career sidekicks included: Stephon Marbury, then had to downgrade to Terrell Brandon, Joe Smith, Szczerbiak, and finally success with Cassell and Sprewell.  If only Marbury was more patient and was willing to share the spotlight with Garnett, the T-Wolves wouldn’t be having the same problem they’ve had for the last 10 years.  Garnett/ Marbury would’ve been the Stockton/ Malone combination of their era.

Houston Texans logoGary Kubiak is going to have his hands full in the AFC South with Indianapolis, Jacksonville, and Tennessee in the same division.  Last season the Texans went 0-6 versus division opponents.  Kubiak has made a name for himself as a Denver Broncos backup quarterback and has been the offensive coordinator since 1994.

This move may lead to a round of musical chairs, as New York Jets offensive coordinator has been eyeing the now vacant Denver coordinator role.  The Jets who are now on the search for both offensive and defensive coordinators, have listed Chris Palmer (Houston Texans), Mike Shephard (New Orleans Saints) or Steve Fairchild (St. Louis Rams) as potential candidates.

Lemieux retiring“This is it,” Lemieux said, “and it hurts.”

The end of Lemieux NHL career was announced on Tuesday, January 24th, 2005. Limieux stated that unlike most players that retire, his reason was not because his heart wasn’t in the game, but rather, his heart did not allow him to play. Limieux, the 13 time All-Star learned in December that he had atrial fibrillation, an irregular heartbeat that can cause his pulse to flutter wildly and must be controlled by medication. He ended his career with 690 goals and 1,033 assists for 1,723 points, the 7th point getter all time. For the time being, Lemieux doesn’t need to worry about passing the mantle down to number 1 draft pick, Sidney Crosby.

Vince Carter Nike Shox VC V shoeNike recently unveiled the new Vince Carter Nike Shox VC V basketball shoe commercial.  The commercial features some awesome dunks that Carter has done in his career, like the huge flush he did with Alonzo Mourning contesting the shot, and the famous dunk over Frederic Weis in the 2000 Olympics.  What is unique about this commercial from other basketball themed sneaker commercials is the music of the song Slam by rap group Onyx being played in the background.  The song, which was originally released back in 1994, may   now gain exposure to some of the younger basketball fans.  Other Onyx songs ended up being synonymous with street basketball, such as their 1998 hit, Shut ‘Em Down.  Want to be the envy of the other ballers on the court?  Better get ready to shell out $109.

Maria Sharapova
I am not going to deny it, I was rooting for Sharapova to win the Australian Open.  At least she made it to the final four and lost in the Semi-finals to Justine Henin-Hardenne in three sets.  Henin-Hardenne is definitely not someone to be ashamed to lose to, she is a four time Grand Slam Winner.  The reason I want Sharapova to have success is that I hope she doesn’t turn into the next Anna Kournikova. You know, as in the ‘Oh I’m good looking, I don’t need tennis, I’ll just be a celebrity’ type mindset that makes you stop being a great player.

Henin-Hardenne will face Amelie Mauresmo in the finals. Mauresmo beat Kim Clijsters as she retired from the match due to an ankle injury.  Clijsters gave it a good run, considering all the injuries she had to endure throughout the tournament.

Hero? This is the latest of insults to the baseball community to what some will have to regard as one of the greatest players of all time.  Barry has released an official statement on his blog stating:

As it is every season, my main goal and main focus is for our team to win a championship. I need to be in the best physical shape for the 2006 season—in what could possibly be my last season. I owe it to the Giants organization, my teammates, and most of all to the fans of San Francisco to give 100 percent this season. I assure you, my decision was not an easy one, but based on my circumstances, I had to put my health and my team first. I wish Team USA the best of luck and even though I won’t be in the dugout with them, I’ll be definitely be cheering them on to bring our country a WBC title.

Which, of course, is an official cop out to the WBC and the spirit of baseball.  Mickey Mantle was once regarded as a draft dodger in his time - as he said is was due to injury.  This came before his rise to stardom in pinstripes.  Since he primarily kept his nose clean after that - with exception to his drinking at the end of his career - Mantle survived the media.  I’m not so sure Barry’s headed down the same path of glory.  Barry’s attitude continues to be questionable and selfish.  In his statement he claims it’s in the best interest of the Giants’ organization and its fans.  Was it in the best interest when he chewed out his agent because he didn’t want to bat second?
